World Vyshyvanka Day Receives Award

The European Heritage Awards are co-sponsored by the European Commission, a branch of the European Union, and Europa Nostra, a pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage. The award recognizes best practices and excellence in the conservation, enhancement, and sharing of Europe’s cultural heritage treasures. They award it in 5 categories:

  • Conservation & Adaptive Reuse
  • Research
  • Education, Training & Skills
  • Citizen Engagement & Awareness-raising
  • Heritage Champions

In June 2022, World Vyshyvanka Day won an award for Citizen Engagement & Awareness-raising. 

May 19, 2022, marked International Vyshyvanka Day around the world, a day to celebrate the beauty and spirit of the traditional embroidered blouse worn by men and women in Ukraine. It is celebrated on the third Thursday of May since 2006. The next International Vyshyvanka Day is May 20, 2023.

Note that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was the first world leader to visit Kyiv, the capital city, early in the war providing an example that others began to follow.
